Abstract
The history of women’s participation in Indian politics is marked by
the contributions of several pioneering figures who challenged social barriers
and paved the way for future generations. Among them, Mrs. Jebamani Masilamani
occupies a distinguished place as the first Christian woman legislator of Tamil
Nadu. Emerging from the socio-political milieu of the early twentieth century,
she dedicated her life to public service, women’s welfare, education, social
reform, and political participation. Her work reflected the growing involvement
of Christian women in public life and demonstrated how education and social
awareness could transform society. This article examines the life,
achievements, political career, and social contributions of Jebamani Masilamani
and evaluates her significance in the history of Tamil Nadu and Indian women’s
empowerment.
