Abstract
The Sahitya Akademi Award is one of India’s highest literary honours
and has played an important role in the growth of Indian English literature.
Established in 1954, the award recognises books of high literary quality in 24
Indian languages, including English. Through its fair selection process, it has
given national recognition to many important Indian English writers such as R.
K. Narayan, Amitav Ghosh, Nissim Ezekiel, and Kamala Das. The award has helped
Indian English writing gain respect, encouraged new themes and forms, and
increased readership and academic study of these works. At the same time,
debates and controversies around the award have shown its close connection with
social and political realities. Overall, the Sahitya Akademi Award has shaped
Indian English literary discourse by setting standards of excellence and
promoting diverse voices.
