Abstract
This dissertation explores how Communist
governments began and developed in Kerala. It focuses on the mix of social,
economic, and cultural factors behind their governance. The research uses a
mixed-methods approach with qualitative and quantitative data. Sources include
archival records, policy documents, and electoral data. The study also relies
on interviews with political analysts and local historians. Key findings show
that the region’s unique social and economic landscape shaped Communist
governance. This landscape included a strong labor movement, land reforms, and
a focus on social equity. These factors created a strong public healthcare
system. This system features fair access and broad health outcomes. Kerala
stands out as a model within India and around the world. These findings
highlight the role of political beliefs in shaping health policies. The history
of governance directly impacts current healthcare practices. The implications
of this study extend beyond Kerala. Policymakers and health practitioners
should consider political ideas when they design healthcare systems. This
research helps explain the relationship between governance and health. It
offers lessons for historical scholarship and current health policy
development.
