Abstract
Rabindranath Tagore’s lyrical poetry presents nature as a profound
spiritual metaphor that articulates his vision of the unity between humanity,
the natural world, and the divine. This paper examines how Tagore employs
images of nature—such as rivers, flowers, light, sky, and seasons—not merely as
aesthetic embellishments but as symbolic representations of spiritual
consciousness and inner awakening. Focusing on selected lyrical poems,
particularly from Gitanjali and related works, the study explores how natural
elements become mediums through which Tagore expresses themes of transcendence,
harmony, self-realization, and the relationship between the finite human soul
and the infinite universal spirit. The research situates Tagore’s poetic vision
within the framework of Indian philosophical traditions, especially the
Upanishadic concept of the oneness of existence. Through a thematic and
interpretative analysis, the paper argues that Tagore transforms nature into a
living presence that mediates between the material and the spiritual realms.
Ultimately, the study highlights how Tagore’s use of nature as a spiritual
metaphor reinforces his philosophy of spiritual humanism and affirms his
lasting significance in world literature.
