Abstract
This dissertation critically assesses the application and relevance of
the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P) principle in the context of the
Afghanistan Crisis of 2021. Through a meticulous analysis of events and
responses during this tumultuous period, the study delves into the complexities
of international norms, state sovereignty, and humanitarian intervention.
Adopting a pillar by pillar analysis approach, the research examines the
pillars of the R2P principle in relation to the Afghanistan Crisis, shedding
light on the challenges and opportunities in implementing R2P effectively. By
synthesizing insights from diverse sources, including reports from esteemed
institutions like the Global Centre for Responsibility to Protect, the study
offers a nuanced understanding of the dynamics shaping global security and
governance. The findings contribute to ongoing debates on the efficacy,
legitimacy, and future prospects of R2P, providing valuable insights for
policymakers, scholars, and practitioners involved in addressing complex
humanitarian crises and upholding global security.
