Settlement Archaeology of the Yamuna Hindon Doab

Abstract
The Yamuna-Hindon doab has brought to light a
large number of ancient sites associated with Proto-historic, Painted Grey Ware
(PGW), Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW), early historic, Gupta, Post-Gupta
and Medieval cultures. However, there is lack of horizontal excavations in the
region. As a result, we do not have a clear picture of early settlements, their
pattern of distribution, spacing of settlements in different cultural periods
and the role of ecological factors in shaping these aspects of cultures. The
present work suggests that in the background of lack of horizontal excavations,
the study of settlement archaeology can perhaps fill some of the gaps and help
in reconstruction and understanding of the ancient past.
